Assignment 11- Art Statement

Throughout my life I have been interested and involved in artwork in some way or another. I have gone through several developmental stages in my work throughout the years. When I was young I began by drawing cartoon characters. I can remember going through my Nintendo Power magazines and drawing Megaman and his enemies. I have always been amazed and influenced by animation whether it be 3 dimensional or 2 dimensional visuals and many other kinds of digital images and the ways in which they were produced.

When enrolling in the Ohio State University about five years ago I never thought that I would pursue my artwork as a career. After much exploring I realized that art was actually the only thing I was meant to do. After I finished the basic courses in art, drawing painting etc I realized that I wanted to make computer art.

Although most of my work is in animation, drawing is still a very strong influence for me. I use it in all of my pre-visual work and it is a good way to get my ideas out faster so I can pick out the good ones. There are not real concepts that carry from piece to piece. I am still exploring my art and trying to find myself as and artist, but a lot of my work is based on nature. I love to watch animals and study the ways in which they constantly evolve in order to survive. My work constantly revolves around these ideas of evolution and the ways in which things are forced to advance themselves.

My work itself has gone through its own evolutional stages and recently devolving. I have found a new fascination with classical animation. I find that hand drawn animation has a much more personal element to it. The imperfections for me add to the work unlike when using computers you try to eliminate those characteristics. In claymation I love the process of physically creating the characters. It involves all of the elements of art that I enjoy. Concept drawing, wire sculpture, clay modeling, animation, story telling and computer compositing.

In the end what I am trying to create a successful piece of art. For my art to be successful it must be evoke emotions and idea’s from its viewers and also inspires them the way I was and still am growing up.
